Salvador, Brazil, March 1999 - An elevator (the first installed in Brazil), known as Elevador Lacerda has connected the two sections of Salvador, Brazil since 1873, having since undergone several upgrades. The city was built on two levels and remains divided into Cidade Alta ("Upper Town") and Cidade Baixa ("Lower Town") to this day. The upper section stands some 85 m (275 ft) above the lower with the city's cathedral and most administrative buildings standing on the higher ground.
