Stephen Tidmore > Tay Ninh, Vietnam, April 1999 - People praying inside a Cao Dai temple called the Tay Ninh Holy See, located in Tay Ninh, Vietnam.  The city is most famous for being the home of the Cao Dai religion, an indigenous Vietnamese faith that includes the teachings of the major world religions. The Cao Dai religion's Holy See, built between 1933 and 1955, is located around 5 km to the east of Tay Ninh's town centre.

The temple is known by the informal name of Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion Temple) or the formal name of Rokuon-ji (Deer Garden Temple).  The Golden Pavilion, or Kinkaku, is a three-story building on the grounds of the temple. The top two stories of the pavilion are covered with pure gold leaf.  It was originally built in 1397 to serve as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, as part of his estate then known as Kitayama.  It was his son who converted the building into a Zen temple of the Rinzai school.  The present structure dates back to 1955.

Stephen Tidmore > Kyoto, Japan, May 14, 1999 - Ryozen Kannon temple in Kyoto, Japan.  The temple is located on lower slopes of the Higashiyama Mountains and has a 24-meter (80 feet) concrete idol of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, built in 1955 to honor the martyrs of World War II, both Japanese and Allied soldiers. Tourists are allowed to enter the body of the statue to see the eleven-headed image of Kannon that is housed within. Many of the soldiers' names are kept in card files.
